Franco Manca – Best Pizza in London…

February 27th, 2009 · 4 Comments

Franco Manca

Before I start I must confess that I’m not the first to rave about this. It’s so good The Guardian did a 2 page write up. Real Italians with real Italian pizza at real Italian prices. What more could you ask for? These guys really know how to make pizza. Nestled deep in Brixton (last stop southbound Victoria Line) Market Arcade it would be easy to miss. Until the recent Guardian review it was locals only. Now, unfortunately, it’s not uncommon the find half hour queues despite the ‘approachable’ personality of the owner…. On my first visit he attempted to play match-maker between me and his male chef, patently ignoring the presence of my girlfriend…. The menu is simple (check it out here) yet effective with the basement prices making it a real treat to behold amidst the financial doom and gloom. If it wasn’t for the chilling breeze sweeping through the arcade you could be forgiven for thinking you were in Napoli. Simply the best pizza in London. Not to be missed!

That’s a smart owner: incites a bit of jealously in your GF. His plan is to keep you together, if she could cook, you wouldn’t queue for half an hour for a pizza…. I’m going to do a tour of the pizzerias in Sondrio, Italy in a couple of weeks, will photo the evidence.

Haha, she’s not a bad cook. You wouldn’t be saying that if you’d been there. Enjoyed another fantastic pizza yesterday!! The daily special. Sundried tomato and artichoke on a margarita base. So good…. You’ll have to come to Brixton to sample it after your tour. See if it lives up to the Sondrio experience!!!

The worst pizza in Sondrio is better than the best London has to offer! How’s that for campalinismo ;)

Murmurings are abound that this honest little establishment is upping sticks to a new venue.
Being in the market arcade in Brixton means that this place is open at lunch time only. The raving press and resulting staggering queues on weekends means there’s a business case for finding somewhere to do business at dinner time too. Here’s to hoping they find a place which remains true to their humble character (and that they stay in Brixton).

Hopefully a new venue doesn’t mean inflated prices and all round sterilisation or loss of charm.

    Watch this space!
